The Record Crate in Glebe has a pretty little music room above its selection of vintage and collector vinyls downstairs. If you can make your way up the rickety stairs, you’re guaranteed an intimate live music experience. Thankfully as a singer, I didn’t have to lug any major gear up those little stairs. RichMachine (drummer of Machiniso) told me that the reason for spiral staircases had something to do with royalty of ancient times, a security measure, so that any invaders couldn’t make a quick getaway. He also said that he wasn’t sure why The Record Crate would take such measures, but I think it might just be a practical space thing. I mean, spiral staircases take up barely any room. That might not be exactly what he told me, but it’s the best I can remember for now. What I was thinking about while I was there was the previous inhabitants – I was probably singing in their old bedroom. All those rows of cafes and shops used to be dwellings. I wonder what the original inhabitants would think if they knew there beloved cottage was now a hangout joint for hipsters. Life. Moves on.
Anyway, the Machiniso gig at the Record Crate on Sunday 16th November was fabulous as always. I love Machiniso and feel very honoured to be a part of such an exciting band, filled with top notch musos. You can search a lifetime and not find a good musical match, so I’m extremely grateful that these boys found me!
It was also incredibly wonderful to see a small but very enthusiastic group of live music supporters. It’s heartening to know that there are still some people out there who get a thrill from the excitement of live music. It thrills me no end, but I sometimes despair for generations behind me. With so much vacuous activity from which to choose, I think a lot of people are missing out on a real passion more than just a primal urge for good beats. For me, almost nothing else hits me right in my emotions than music.
Rondeau opened the afternoon at 5pm with some very cool jazz TV show themes and other well known vintage 60s/70s jazzy inspired groove. Machiniso came on about 6.15pm. See photos & video below. The evening closed with Aqua Zebra who remind me of a Brand New Heavies kinda thing. Great band with some interesting songs!
So, shall I see you at the next gig?
